Five Preventative Measures for Anti-Aging Eye Care

The eyes may be the window to the soul – but more accurately, the eyes are the window to the health of your skin. The skin under and around your eyes is thinner and more delicate, and the eye area is one of the first places to show signs of aging. Your eyes also do a lot of work throughout the day – they blink, squint, crinkle, smile, furrow, and help you express emotions.

As you age, your skin decreases production of collagen, elastin, and sebum (oil) – all the components that keep it smooth and supple. You are also exposed to environmental toxins, free radicals, and sun damage that cause signs of aging on the skin. Lastly, your sleep schedule and diet affect the appearance and health of your skin. From these factors, your eye area is vulnerable to developing wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, dryness, dullness, dark circles, and puffiness.

When it comes to skin care, it’s easier to prevent problems before they occur, rather than try to correct the damage. With that in mind, here are five preventative measures you can take now to keep the skin around your eyes smooth and wrinkle-free as you age.

1. Wear Sunscreen and Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes from the sun’s UV rays is the most important way you can protect the delicate skin from premature wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet. Sun exposure causes the skin around your eyes to become even thinner, and it leads to premature signs of aging, like lines and wrinkles. When you will be spending time outside, apply sunscreen under and around the eyes, as well as on the top eyelids. Pop on a pair of wraparound sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Sunglasses give your eyes an extra layer of protection from the sun, and they prevent wrinkles caused by squinting into the sunlight.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Well-hydrated skin is healthy skin, and the skin under and around your eyes needs just as much hydration as the rest of your face. If you are neglecting the eye area during your moisturizing routine, the skin can become dry and dull. Moisturizing is especially important as you age, because your sebaceous glands slow down the production of sebum that keeps your skin hydrated and nourished. If you don’t replace the moisture your sebaceous glands can’t produce, your skin will start to look prematurely aged – especially around the eyes, where the skin is thin and prone to dryness.

Gentle facial moisturizers can be used around the delicate eye area. However, some facial moisturizers aren’t designed to be used around the eyes. In that case, look for a hydrating eye cream that contains SPF.

3. Invest in an Eye Cream

Find the right eye cream that has ingredients to meet your individual eye care needs:

  • For wrinkles and crow’s feet,  retinols help stimulate collagen growth to reduce their appearance
  • For dryness, hyaluronic acid helps maintain skin’s moisture barrier and hydration level
  • For dark circles, caffeine helps soothe puffiness and inflammation
  • For aging skin, antioxidants and Vitamin C help fight free radical damage from environmental toxins and sun exposure

4. Remove Eye Makeup Before Bed

Always remove your eye makeup at night. Leaving makeup on for too long can irritate the skin around your eyes and cause it to become dry, dull, and flaky. Use a gentle, oil-free makeup remover before bed to wipe away remaining makeup and dirt.

5. Take Care of the Rest of Your Body

The health of your skin is dependent on your lifestyle choices. Self-care involves more than just using moisturizer and applying eye cream. Eat well, sleep well, and exercise regularly to prevent early signs of aging around your eyes. Sometimes dark circles, puffiness, and dull skin are caused by not getting enough sleep or by eating meals high in sodium and sugars.

If you smoke, consider quitting. The toxins and chemicals in cigarette smoke cause free radical damage, which leads to wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, cigarette smoke can cause your eyes to look red and irritated, and constant squinting due to smoke in your eyes can lead to wrinkle formation.
